Brussels, 26/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Commission confirmed having suspended the payments and the calls for tenders for projects financed by the EU in Slovakia, while awaiting information on the siphoning off of funds. There have been problems and an investigation showed conflicts of interest, stated the spokesperson for the Commission, Jonathan Faull, adding that the Director of the public services responsible for certain dossiers has been dismissed. A few weeks ago, the Commission wrote to the Slovak authorities requesting for further information, and in the meantime suspended aid, he added. The Slovak head of the Phare programme coordination was dismissed by the Slovak authorities one month ago, after an corruption investigation was launched on this issue, indicates the Reuters press agency.
