Strasbourg, 12/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Human Rights Commissioner, Alvaro Gil-Robles made the opening speech of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (23/27 April, Strasbourg) on Monday. On Tuesday, the deputies will be examining the monitoring report on Ukraine (see EUROPE of 9 April, p. 6) recommending the country be suspended, and will be addressed by Mircea Geoana, Romanian Foreign Minister and acting OSCE President. On Wednesday, the Assembly will consider the situation in Kosovo and on Thursday, it will be addressed by the President of the Committee of Ministers, Indulis Berzins, the Latvian Foreign Minister.
