Strasbourg, 12/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - During its emergency debates last Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it condemns the kidnapping in Mogadishu, at the end of March, of humanitarian workers from Medecins sans Frontieres, and calls on the chiefs of the various Somali factions to abstain from any violent acts. The EP calls on the national transition government to open a constructive dialogue with "all the representatives of the Somali reality" and to take part in negotiations with the Somaliland and Puntland authorities, to re-establish national unity. Moreover, it calls on the EU to take a "politically coherent initiatives" for Somalia (as it had done in the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea), for example by including this country in the mandate of Senator Rino Serri as special representative for the Union Presidency, or by nominating a special representative for Somalia.
