Strasbourg, 12/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EP adopted a resolution on human rights in Pakistan calling for the organising of free and pluralist elections, the cancellation of the ban on any political meeting in public areas, and the immediate freeing of a very large number of human rights militants that have been arrested, by insisting on the respect of freedom of expression. These demands correspond to those sent to Islamabad by the EU Troika, said European Commissioner Pascal Lamy. Furthermore, the EP is sending a new call to the military junta in order for it to cease all forms of aid to the Talibans in Afghanistan and that it fight the fundamentalist groups in Pakistan. Finally the European Commission is called upon to launch support programmes for NGOs active in the promotion of human rights in Pakistan.
