03/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, Member States agreed to the delivery of the first part of EU assistance to Serbia for 2001, the Commission's spokesperson announced on Tuesday. This first tranche, of a total of 150 million euro should be released "in a short while" by the Commission. "We will deliver this initial aid and continue to insist on full cooperation" by the Belgrade authorities with the International War Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia, stressed the spokesperson, stipulating that it was not "strict conditionality but persuasion". The arrest of Slobodan Milosevic is a step in the right direction, "but we expect more". The second tranche of 90 million euro is planned in this year's budget for aid to Serbia.
