Brussels, 03/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has sent France a letter of formal notice after France's refusal to supply to the Commission a copy of a scientific inventory of sites that qualify for inclusion in the Community nature conservation network, Natura 2000. During the nineties, the Musée national français d'histoire naturelle drew up a scientific list with a view to determining the sites likely to be incorporated into Natura 2000, but France has always refused to supply this inventory to the Commission, although it had used it to prepare the list of proposed sites that it sent to Brussels. In order to assess the proposal for sites to be included in Natura 2000, the Commission considers it is necessary to examine the French inventory, all the more as it considers that the ""French proposals for Natura 2000 are seriously inadequate" (which was the subject of action before the Court of Justice - see EUROPE of 28 February, p.14). France has two months in which to respond to this formal notice.
