Simon Peres in Stockholm next week

Brussels, 30/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Swedish Presidency announced that the Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Peres, will meet Mrs Lindh and Mr Persson on 2 and 3 April in Stockholm.

Furthermore, the Presidency adopted on behalf of the EU the following declaration: "the EU calls on both parties to act with the maximum restraint, restore calm and do their utmost to avoid actions leading to new victims. Furthermore, it calls upon both parties to refrain from any unilateral actions that could generate more violence and aggravate the situation. There is no military solution to the ongoing conflict. Only a resumed peace process can create the conditions for an improved security situation, as a towards the normalisation. It is also essential that both sides continue and intensify their security cooperation. The EU deplores the recent increase of violence in the region and the daily loss of life among both Palestinians and Israelis".
