Paris, 30/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Assembly of the Western European Union (which has added to its name "the Interim European Security and Defence Assembly") is organising a colloquium at the Reichstag, in Berlin, on 2 and 3 May, on "Revising the European security concept - responding to new risks".
On 2 May, work will be opened by Klaus Buhler, the Assembly's President, Friedbert Pfluger, Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on European Affairs, and Walter Stutzle, State Secretary for Defence. Talks will be on: - challenges to Europe's security, with, notably, the participation of Romanian Foreign Minister Marcea Geoana, Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE; - political responses to the challenges, with, in particular, the participation of the President of the EU Council, Anna Lindh, Lars-Erik Lundin, Head of the Security Policy Unit of the European Commission, and Fernando Davara, Director of the WEU Satellite Centre, of Torrejon (which is passing under the authority o the European Union).
On 3 May, work will be on: - military responses to the challenges, with, in particular, General Ronald T. Kadich, of the Pentagon, Sergei Ivanov, new Russian Defence Minister; - towards a new European security concept, with, notably, Dutch Foreign Minister Franciscus Gerardus de Grave, Co-Chairman-in-Office of the WEU Council, and NATO Deputy Secretary General, Sergio Balanzino; - the role of the United Nations, with UN Deputy Secretary-General, Jean-Maris Guehenno.
