21/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - For the very first time, EU nationals benefited from the right to vote and to be eligible at French municipal elections this month. After the second round, 355 "European" candidates were elected: 152 Portuguese, 45 Italians, 44 Germans, 38 Belgians, 30 Spanish, 25 British, 12 Dutch, 5 Danish, 3 Luxembourg nationals, 1 Irish, 2 Finnish, 2 Greeks and 1 Swede. None of these candidates will be mayor or deputy mayor but may hold seats on municipal councils.
