Rangoon, 29/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Union Troika (current Swedish Presidency, future Belgian Presidency, Council and Commission) at senior official level, which has been in Rangoon since Sunday and where it is staying until Wednesday, is in principle to meet the Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, on Tuesday. The latter is still under house arrest. The European delegation, instructed to assess the situation in Burma since the very discreet opening of a dialogue between the Junta and opponents, was to have talks on Monday with the First Secretary of the Junta, General Khin Nyunt, Foreign Minister Win Aung. Wednesday, the Troika is to meet leaders of ethnic minorities and United Nations representatives as well as those of non-governmental organisations.
