Brussels, 25/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt presented to the External Relations Committees of the Chamber and the Senate and of the federal advisory committee on European issues the main lines of the Belgian EU Council Presidency. Belgium will hold EU Presidency during the second half of this year. Above all, Mr Verhofstadt, who will present the definitive programme of the future Belgian Presidency at the end of April, said that enlargement will of course be one of its priorities, as well as: - the strengthening of the EU's external dimension; - the debate on the future of Europe (which must result in the adoption of a declaration by the European Council of Laeken, in December); - the creation of a European area of freedom, security and justice; - improved quality of work, the promotion of equal opportunities and the fight against exclusion and poverty; - the promotion of sustainable economic growth and coordination of economic policies; - the promotion of sustainable development and the quality of life.
