Chiquita files complaint with Court of First Instance

Brussels / Cincinnati, 25/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - The US company Chiquita Brands International filed a complaint, on Thursday, before the EU's Court of First Instance, with a view to obtaining compensation for damages worth EUR 564 million incurred by the banana import regime as modified in January 1999. In the context of these proceedings, that it hopes will be "expeditious", the multinational reserved itself the right to invoke future injury based on persistent illegality of the regime, including injury that it will suffer if the Commission implements the first-come first-served system, which is widely considered as incompatible with WTO rules.
