THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cyprus

25/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - EU Council President Anna Lindh said in response to questions from members of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs that, according to the Swedish Presidency, "it would be wrong for the EU to take up a separate initiative on the Cyprus issue". The Swedish Presidency believes the UN initiative should be supported in every way so that the proximity talks are successful, she said. Luxembourg Socialist Jacques Poos, EP Rapporteur on Cyprus' accession to the EU, noted the impasse in these talks since the rejection, by the Turk Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, of Kofi Annan's invitation to meet again at the end of this month.
