New call for proposals in framework of "European initiative for Democracy and Human Rights"

Brussels, 22/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 17 January the European Commission launched a new call for proposals under the "European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights" (EIDHR), for a global amount of EUR 38 million. To ensure the proper use of the resources, the European executive will concentrate its efforts on ten fields for priority action in the key regions and countries. These fields are notably the support for education in human rights, the protection of minorities, the promotion of freedom of expression, the rights of the child, the abolition of the death penalty, the strengthening of the rule of law, the promotion of democracy and good "governance" and conflict prevention.

The candidates, which must be non profit organisations or non-governmental organisation (but also local authorities and public organisation such as universities and television or radio stations), are invited to submit projects for a minimum amount of EUR 300,000 in the fields and geographic areas selected by the Commission. The subsidies granted will cover a maximum of 80% of the projects costs (up to 100% for local organisation in developing countries). The final deadline for the presentation of projects has been set for Monday 19 March 2001.
