Brussels, 29/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - The French Presidency adopted the following statement on Kashmir on 28 December, on behalf of the EU (unofficial translation): "The European Union welcomes the recent decision by the Indian authorities to prolong for one month the cease fire in Kashmir. The Union is likewise pleased to note Pakistan's statement that it intends to withdraw part of its troops along the line of control. Coming in the wake of the initiatives already taken by the two countries on 19 November and 2 December, these new gestures will help reduce tension in the area. The EU encourages India and Pakistan to pursue their efforts, in keeping with the Lahore spirit, with a view to early resumption of dialogue and a peaceful settlement of their dispute."
