Brussels, 29/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - The International Road Transport Union (IRU) invited the future Swedish EU Council Presidency to devote itself to the fundamental difficulties that are a risk to the road transport sector in Europe. In order to prevent the crisis happening again this year, the IRU mainly calls for the creation of a system for observing the road transport market, similar to that proposed in the context of the dossier on rail liberalisation. The initiative should be completed by increased harmonisation of the single market in order to do away with the causes of distortion, such as the employment of drivers who are non-EU nationals. The IRU also calls for enhanced vocational training and more stringent criteria for access to the profession.
