Summit, Thursday morning in Nice, of European Conference member countries

Brussels, 06/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - This Thursday 7 December morning, the EU Heads of State and Government will meet in Nice their counterparts from the countries presently members of the European Conference, namely the candidate countries (10 CEEC, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey) and Switzerland. The meeting, which will be finished by a joint lunch just before the formal opening of the Nice Summit, will mainly be dedicated to EU institutional reform and the general state of the enlargement process. We are not awaiting spectacular results, but the leaders of the candidate countries will no doubt insist over the need for the EU 15 to find, in Nice, a good agreement over the IGC, in order to prepare the EU for the upcoming enlargement. The discussions will also cover the new enlargement strategy, proposed by the Commission, which received at the start of the week the approval of the EU Ministers for Foreign Affairs and which should be formally approved by the Heads of State and Government in Nice. The European Conference in Nice follows on from the meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers from the countries of the Sochaux Conference, last 23 November. During this meeting, the same subjects had been discussed (see EUROPE of 25 November).
