Lord Robertson tries to reassure Turks

Ankara, 24/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - "No, I'm not satisfied. Turkish rights in this affair are being neglected. Discussions (on EU access to NATO assets for its Petersberg tasks) will be taken without us. It is impossible to accept them". This is what Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit told NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson on Thursday, during the latter's visit to Ankara to reassure Turkey regarding the mechanism for consulting European allies non-members of the European Union as provided for by the latter for the operations of its future rapid reaction force (see EUROPE of 22 November, p.6 for the details provided by French Defence Minister Alain Richard). The EU has made proposals aimed at involving its Allies and providing them with as much influence as possible in the process, said Lord Robertson, stressing that, should the Union want to use NATO assets, the decision would be up to the North Atlantic Council (in which Turkey sits, and may therefore block a decision: Ed.).
