Brussels, 15/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, issued the following statement:
"I was impressed by the peaceful and smooth conduct of the 11 November General Elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Absence of major security incidents and a good voter turnout largely contributed to the success of the electoral process. It is a clear sign that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are aware of the importance of democratic elections and want to make their voice heard. I am nevertheless disappointed that the nationalist message is still so powerful at a time when Bosnia's neighbours have turned their back on past policies and have resolutely embarked on a forward-looking course.
The real test will however come with the formation of governments. The overriding concerns of Bosnia and Herzegovina's citizens are well known: stabilisation of the economy, creation of job opportunities, fight against crime and corruption and return of refugees. The future leaders have their work cut out for them. I urge them to address these challenges in an efficient and responsible manner. The responsibility for the further integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the European family of nations rests on their shoulders".
