Delegation of ten women from EP on scene of Israeli-Palestinian confrontations

Strasbourg, 15/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - Ten women, members of the European Parliament, undertook, on the initiative of Luisa Morgantini (GUE-PRC, Italian), a visit to Palestine and Israel from the 27 to 31 October. The delegation included the French Communist Sylviane Ainardi, the French Socialist Marie-Arlette Carlotti, Marielle De Sarnez (EPP-UDF, French), the French Gaullist Marie-Theres Hermange, the Greek Socialist Anna Karamanou, Pasqualina Napoletano (Democratici di Sinistra), the French Socialist Martine Roure, Ulla Sanbaek (EDD, Danish) and the Dutch Liberal Louisewies Van Der Lann. They went to the scene of the confrontations and met many Palestinian and Israeli women. During a press conference, they insisted on the need to renew the links of dialogue between the two parties and the role that the EU must play in this context. Mr De Sarnez spoke of "the great revolt of the Palestinians which we understand" and the sadness of "the peace camp in Israel, which is completely demoralised". Mrs Ainardi underlined "the accumulation of frustrations on the Palestinian side" due to the dramatic economic and social situation in which the Palestinians live on a daily basis. "We have been welcomed with open arms on both sides", said Mrs Roure noting that the American intervention is completely demoralised and that the two parties want the EU to be finally involved in the peace process. Mr Sandbaek spoke of a premeditate plan on the Israeli side to provoke a Palestinian revolt and interrupt the peace process. She called for the sending of a peace keeping mission. Mrs Hermange hoped that the Member States quickly answer the call she made in view of providing aid to injured children. On the initiative of several colleagues, Mrs Napoletano hoped that a more important place be given to women in the peace process.
