EURYDICE celebrates twentieth anniversary with seminar covering future of cooperation in education and by a book on its development

Brussels, 07/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - For its twentieth anniversary, The Education Information Network in Europe EURYDICE is organising on Friday 10 November in Brussels a seminar on the future of its contribution towards European cooperation in education. For this event, the European unit in EURYDICE is publishing a work that retraces the development of the network over the last twenty years of its existence and draws a positive assessment of this activity. The work will be handed by the Education Commissioner Viviane Reding, to the EU Education Ministers during the Council next Thursday 9 November.

The participating in this Friday's seminar are representatives from DG Education/Culture from the European Commission, the OECD Education Committee, Eurostat (EC Statistical Office), from the CEDEFOP (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training) and the European Foundation for Training (Turin) - will try and bring an answer to the following questions: 1) what assets do the acquis of the EURYDICE network represent for future cooperation in education?, 2) what are the new needs presenting themselves, notably following the Lisbon and Feira Summit?, 3) how will the EURYDICE network prepare itself to answer?.

As a reminder, the EURYDICE network has as aim to provide reliable and comparable information on national political systems for education. Its role is that of an observatory, emphasising both the diversity of the education systems as well as their common trends. It is an integral part of the Socrates programme since 1995. It is formed of national units created by the national ministries for education and a European unit established by the European Commission. EURYDICE is present in 29 countries (the 15 EU countries, three EEA/EFTA countries, 10 from Central and Eastern Europe and Cyprus). Contact: European EURYDICE unite in Brussels.
