Brussels, 20/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of Presidents of the EP political groups accepted the creation of a temporary, 36-member committee on "human genetics and other new technologies in modern medicine". The committee, expected to work for one year, would begin its work in January 2001 (agreement from the EPP/ED group was obtained upon this condition). It would be entrusted with drawing up an inventory of all the new and potential developments in human genetics and their uses; examine the ethical, legal, economic and social problems posed by such new developments and their use; and examine and recommend to what extent the public interest requires that other restrictions be imposed on such developments and uses. The mandate must be formally approved by the EP Plenary.
