Brussels, 25/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - On 20 September, the French Presidency made the following Declaration on behalf of the EU on the situation in Timor: "The EU remains deeply concerned with the current state of violence and insecurity in West Timor and its negative impact on East Timor, as well as the continued tension and violence in the Moluccas and Aceh. The EU calls on the Government of Indonesia to take immediate and appropriate action to disarm and dismantle the militias in West Timor and to bring to justice those responsible for the attacks on international personnel and refugees, in accordance with previous statements by the Union and the terms of UNSC resolution 1319 (2000) of 8 September. The resumption of humanitarian aid in West Timor and of the resettlement of refugees is an essential condition for lasting peace and stability. The EU stands ready to support the Government of Indonesia, together with the relevant international humanitarian agencies, in solving the pressing problem of refugees in West Timor. The EU appreciates that the Indonesian Government has agreed to a visit of a EU-mission to the Moluccas. The European Union urges the Government of Indonesia to swiftly restore and consolidate peace and normalcy on the Moluccas. The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the EU, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration."
