Bilateral relations have never been so good, Ambassador Shpek is pleased to note

Brussels, 25/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - Speaking last week before the European Parliament's delegation for relations with Ukraine, a few days after the EU/Ukraine Summit in Paris on 15 September (see EUROPE of 16 September, pp.6/7), Ukraine's Ambassador to the EU Roman Shpek said that bilateral relations between his country and the Fifteen had never been as good as now. "My personal assessment of this summit is that we have never had such a good spirit, clear mutual understanding and friendly atmosphere", said Mr. Shpek. "We found a common language practically on all issues, even on very sensitive ones", like Chernobyl, he was pleased to announce. Ukraine's view of the EU is based on two goals: the short-term goal is to deepen and intensify cooperation in all fields; the long-term "strategic" goal is, one day, to become a member of the EU, Mr. Shpek pointed out, observing: "The words of L. Kuchma that we have to divide the two issues - membership and cooperation - and solve each of them when both sides were prepared to do so were warmly accepted by the EU leaders". The ambassador also stressed the importance his country attaches to intensifying the inter-parliamentary dialogue with the European Parliament.
