Commissioner Nielson visits Greenland to discuss evolution of EU development aid

Brussels, 25/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - As we had announced earlier, Commissioner Poul Nielson will be in Greenland from 28 to 30 August to discuss the EU's contribution to Greenland's development. Two themes will be the focus of this discussion: negotiation of the future EU-Greenland fishing agreement and renewal of the association regime that links the European Union to the twenty overseas countries and territories (OCTs), of which Greenland is part. The current fishing agreement expires at the end of this year and the next agreement could be finalised during September. The EU hopes in this agreement to separate the contributions relating to fishing rights and those corresponding to development aid, pending revision, in 2003, of this second part (see EUROPE of 18 August, p.1). The new decision on relations between the EU and OCTs, which should be taken by next February, will be an essential element of this development aid.
