Brussels, 18/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Round Table of European and Japanese businessmen, has presented "joint recommendations" to the EU/Japan Summit, in Tokyo on Wednesday, for "Developing a new paradigm in trade relations between the EU and Japan".
In these recommendations, adopted at he "EU-Japan Business Dialogue Round Table", held on Monday and Tuesday and chaired by Etienne Davignon (President of Societe Generale) and Tadahiro Sekimoto (Emeritus President of NEC Corporation), the businessmen suggest three lines of action: 1) improve the "business environment", by, for example, consolidating the tax systems, reforming company legislation, and rapidly concluding mutual recognition agreements, 2) adopt international rules encouraging "global" economic activity, among other things by playing in favour of the adoption of international accountancy rules and harmonising transfer pricing taxation within companies, 3) create a stable and safe environment for electronic commerce, through cooperation between governments and industry, as well as international consensus in defining the policy line in the sector. Finally, the European and Japanese businessmen plead in favour of beginning a new WTO round
Created in 1995, the EU-Japan Business Dialogue Round table brings together some forty large European and Japanese companies. Its next meeting will be in Sweden in June 2001.
