Chancellor Schüssel meets Commission - Three Wisemen should be named on Wednesday

Brussels / Strasbourg, 11/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - As planned, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel is to make an official visit to the European Commission on Wednesday. He will hold a joint press conference with President Romano Prodi at 12h45.

It is also today, at the end of the morning, that the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Luzius Wildhaber, should announce the names of the three persons designated to report on respect by the Austrian government of the EU's "common values" and on "the development of the political nature" of Mr Haider's FPÖ. The Three Wisemen will be from the European Union and at least one of them will be an eminent lawyer. Several names of political personalities have done the rounds over the past few days: former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, former Head of the Spanish Government Felipe Gonzalez, former Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene and former European Commission President Jacques Delors.
