Meeting between Solana and representative of Serb opposition

Brussels, 21/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - During a meeting, on Wednesday in Brussels, with one of the leaders of the Serb opposition, Zoran Djindjic from the Democrat Party, the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, stressed that the European Union gives as much support as it can to the democratic opposition and to the civil society in Serbia. This support was confirmed during the European Council, which has just been held in Feira. Mr Solana nonetheless insisted with his interlocutor on the need for a "united and robust" Serb opposition "with a credible programme" allowing it to appear, in the eyes of the population, as a "real alternative to Mr Milosevic". Mr Solana encouraged the Serb opposition to draw up joint lists and to adopt a common political platform.

After this meeting, Mr Djindjic felt, however, that the Serb opposition needs more support. He said that the opposition parties "need a clear vision of the support to be given by the EU to a democratic government and in the prospect of accession in the medium term. He spoke of three, five or ten years.
