Feira, 21/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a declaration on Ethiopia and Eritrea, annexed to its conclusions, the European Council welcomes the signing, in Algiers, of the agreement on cessation of hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea. It warmly congratulates the president-in-office of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, for having reached this important result with a view to a global agreement on the implementation of the peace plan proposed by the OAU with the support of the European Union, through the voice of the Presidency's special representative, Senator Rino Serri, as well as the United States. Given the decisions of the United Nations, the implementation of the peace agreement will have a positive impact on the stability and development of the whole region.
