EP deplores irregularities in electoral process and calls for sending of observers mission

Strasbourg, 20/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Parliament, during its emergency debates, last week, adopted a resolution by the EPP groups, Socialist, Liberal and Unitary Left on the elections that maintained the Peruvian President in power Mr. Fujimori, deploring the irregularities that lead to the withdrawal of the opposition candidate Alejandro Toledo "also bringing into question the legitimacy of the electoral process". We would have liked that the resolution go further and notes the "illegality" of these elections, noted the French Green Mr. Lipietz, while adding that his group could still accept the resolution on condition that the Parliament adopt amendments inviting the Peruvian government to end the demonstrations of military force and intimidation towards the population" and underlined his support to the mission under the responsibility of the Organisation of American States (OAS) to contribute to "the search for a democratic solution to the Peruvian situation." The plenary effectively adopted these two amendments, and the European Commissioner Gunter Verheugen reminded that the EU adopted a common position in which it asserts its support to the OAS mission. Furthermore, the Parliament called on the EU to send on the ground, before re-assessing its co-operation with Peru, a observers mission responsible for evaluating the degree "of democratic credibility" in the country.
