Information campaign on passengers rights will be official launched on Sunday

Brussels, 15/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Loyola de Palacio, will officially launched, on Sunday, the European information campaign on air transport passengers. On the sidelines of the European Summit in Feira, the Commissioner will symbolically post the "European Passengers Charter," in Lisbon airport. This Charter should then be posted in all the European airports as of 23 June, date of the European Airports General Assembly taking place in Rome.

Defined last March by the Commission, the "charter of passenger rights" includes all the passenger rights defined by European legislation, i.e.: a) the right to be informed on the flights and reservations (information of different rates and options, stopovers, etc.); b) the right to obtain compensation in case of overbooking (passenger choice between a ticket refund, carriage, as quickly as possible, or another date, and financial compensation, a telephone call, or a hotel); c) the right to compensation in case of an accident); d) the right to protection of personal data; e) in case of package holidays, the right to have precise information, but also the pass a reservation onto another person; f) right to compensation in cases where the rights cited are not respected.

Furthermore, the Commission must present, next week, a communication proposing new measures to regulate the relations between passengers and airline companies, adding to the rights included in the "Passenger Charter."
