Greek MEPs all for clarity over attack on General Mr. Saunders

Strasbourg, 15/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, condemned, in plenary, the assassination of the British military attaché in Greece, General Stephen Saunders, by the organisation "November 17." Several Greek MEPs spoke to call for clarity on this new attack; we condemn as with all those that have been committed in the last twenty five years by the "ghost organisation", announced Mrs. Giannakou-Koutsikou, member of Nea Demokratia. The Greek Communist Mr. Alyssandrakis also condemned the attack, noting that it occurred shortly after the publication of a report by the American Congress, which presents Greece as a country that does not effectively fight against terrorism. As for the Greek Socialist Mrs. Karamanou, she signalled that, while she was going to New York for the UN conference on the follow-up of the Peking conference on women, with a MEP passport, she had difficulties with the American authorities. She underlined that Greece is the only European Union country from which the United States requires a special authorisation for entry.
