Explanations from Patten and Solana

Luxembourg, 13/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - During a press conference, Commissioner Chris Patten explained that his paper on CFSP management (reproduced in No2193 of our series EUROPE/Documents) was not a complaint about his role compared to that of Javier Solana, but rather the expression of concern about whether the Commission is making a sufficient contribution to CFSP. He trusts that the Commission will discuss the matter in the near future, in the interest of the CFSP and of everyone. The Commissioner reaffirmed that he enjoyed "excellent relations" with the High Representative. Invited to give his point of view, Javier Solana said it was up to the Commission to study the paper and that they would see what happened next. He considered all the effort made to improve CFSP as satisfactory. He said by way of conclusion: "I shall never be one of the element of the problem".
