The Danish giant CARLSBERG (turnover in 1999 of DKK 31.3 bn with 21,906 employees) has merged with he Norwegian brewery ORKLA (1999 turnover of DKK 6 bn, with 11,681 employees), crating the world's 6th largest brewery (in volume) with a turnover of 3.08 bn euro and 27,000 employees. Called CARLSBERG BREWERIES A/S, the new group will be controlled to the tune of 60% by CARLSBERG and 40% by ORKLA, and have an annual production of some 54 million hectoliters of beer.
