Brussels, 30/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - A little before the opening of the work of the Energy Council, Tuesday morning, a delegation from the European Federation of Public Services Unions (EPSU), made up of the spokesman Jan-Willem Goudriaan and two representatives from affiliated trade unions, Victor Duarte (Sindel, Portugal) and Filip Baeckenlandt (Acod Gazelco, Belgium), met the Portuguese State Secretary for Energy and Industry, Victor Santos to hand in a petition signed by 40,000 workers from the "energy" sector to tell him of the concerns of the "electricity" sector faced with the job losses stemming from the liberalisation of the market. "What the trade unions want," said Jan-Willem Goudriaan, "is a package of social measures to accompany the liberalisation, i.e.: job-security, ensure that employers and trade unions negotiate the training of workers, and strengthened social dialogue." It is unacceptable that from 25 to 30% of jobs in the sector should disappear in the next 4 to 5 years.
