ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) breweries

Belgium's INTERBREW (turnover of EUR 3.24 billion in 1999 with 24,348 employees) has paid GBP 400 million for the brewery activities of Britain's WHITBREAD (global turnover of EUR 5.2 billion in 1999 with 76,100 employees). This operation puts the Belgian group in the number three spot in Europe after the Netherlands' HEINEKEN, which was also interested in taking over the division, and Britain's SCOTTISH & NEWCASTLE.
