Commission makes known its grievances on acquisition of cable operator Telewest (gb) by Microsoft and Liberty Media

Brussels, 26/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Commission confirmed that it has forwarded a letter of grievances to Microsoft concerning its acquisition of Telewest communications (Telewest), together with Liberty Media. Opening a detailed inquiry in March, the Commission had pointed out that its concerns relate to the implications that the merger operation would have on: a) the provision of software for digital decoders in the United Kingdom; b) the choice of cable services available for consumers in the Telewest concession sector. The Commission fears that acquisition of Telewest for an amount of over EUR 3.3 billion, could lock the expanding market of Internet cable access services and, from this, access to electronic commerce. The European anti-trust services must give their stance before 4 August.
