Favourable majority for lifting of sanctions?

Athens, 11/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Greek press agency ANA, quoting "informed sources", asserted that, during the informal meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers in the Azores, all the Member States, except the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, moved in favour of the proposal by the Greek Minister Papandreou to lift the sanctions imposed on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The isolation of Belgrade has had no results, noted Mr. Papandreou.

ANA also indicated that, in the Azores, the EU Ministers welcomed in a "particularly favourable" manner the Greek proposal to organise an international Summit on the Balkans, and that Mr. Papandreou noted that the EU must have a clear position on the respect of borders and human rights. ANA recalls that a meeting of the Stability Pact countries Foreign Affairs Ministers for Southeastern Europe and to which "will be invited the Serb bodies" will take place from the 7 to 10 June.
