04/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, British Conservative Roy Perry welcomes the adoption by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, during its vote on the Dimitrakopoulos/Leinen report, of an amendment recommending a change to Article 289 of the European Treaty to allow the European Parliament to decide, by absolute majority of its members, on the location of its seat and of all its meetings. While recognising the symbolic nature of the choice of Strasbourg in the fifties, he considers that "the only symbolism that Strasbourg now projects is that the Parliament is prepared to waste time and money". He hoped the plenary would follow the Committee on Constitutional Affairs during its vote on this report next week in Strasbourg, so that an end may be put to the "waste of taxpayers' money".
