Mrs. Fontaine outraged over "constitutional immunity" granted to General Pinochet

Brussels, 27/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, reacted to the vote for the "circumstantial amendment" by the Chilean Congress that has "as sole aim to protect General Pinochet from proceedings for crimes of which he is accused" by asserting that it is a "trick with regard to the claimed intentions" to judge Pinochet "fairly in Chile and a provocation to the countries who have started proceedings for violation of fundamental rights." Mrs Fontaine underlined the coherence that is required by the "new international order that creates international tribunals against war crimes and crimes against humanity and asserts that we cannot claim to want to judge "the abominations perpetrated in Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo" and at the same time "remain silenced for reasons of State, even in the name of civil peace, on the crimes committed elsewhere in the world, in Chile or Chechnya.
