Lisbon / Brussels, 27/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The spokesman's service for the EU Council President, Jaime Gama, commented on the result of presidential elections in Russia, hoping that President Putin would avail himself of the conditions for undertaking reform policy in a democratic context with Russia's full integration in the international community. The Portuguese Presidency also pointed out that it is hoping for a "strategic partnership" with a "democratic Russia" and that it plans to clarify Moscow's attitude on its relations with the EU and with NATO and on a peaceful solution to the Chechnyan crisis, first of all during a forthcoming Troika mission formed of Messrs Gama, Védrine, Solana and Patten (this mission, decided by the Lisbon Summit, is expected to take place on 3 and 4 April, said the Commission spokesman on Monday), and then during the EU/Russia summit on 17 May in Moscow.
