Brussels, 24/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is proposing increasing the maximum length of non-articulate buses to 15 meters throughout the EU, whereas now it is 12 meters in certain Member States. The width would be limited to 2.55 m. The maximum length of articulated buses would remain unchanged at 18 meters. This Commission proposal aims to improve and complement Directive 96/53/EC which currently covers vehicles carrying goods. The proposal comprises different provisions concerning bus safety and equipment.
The Transport Council had asked the Commission, in March 1999, to make such a proposal, so that 15-meter buses could circulate throughout Europe.
