European Central Bank raises its key rates

Frankfurt, 16/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - As we predicted, on Thursday, the European Central Bank decided to raise:

  • is short-term interest rate by 0.25% (from 3.25% to 3.50%). This rise will take effect from 22 March;
  • its two other key rates, the ceiling rate at 4.5% and the base rate at 2.50, or also a rise of 0.25%, but, for their part, they take effect Friday 17 March.

In a press release, the ECB says that these decision will help hedge against the risks that exist for price stability and, consequently contribute to maintaining a "favourable financial perspective for the economy in the euro zone". For the ECB, "the economic conditions and prospects for the euro zone are better now than they have ever been these past ten years".
