Strasbourg, 16/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - Adopting the report by Swedish Conservative Anders Wijkman, the European Parliament modified, in the framework of the co-decision procedure, the Council's common position on the regulation promoting the full integration of the environmental dimension in the development process in developing countries. It called for the financial allocation for 2000-2006 to be set at EUR 93 million instead of the EUR 50.4 million foreseen by the Council. Parliament also called for all development cooperation projects to include environmental elements identifying and evaluating the sustainability of the actions undertaken. The EP particularly called for the promotion of renewable energy sources and the preservation of biological diversity. Parliament also supports information campaigns in the LDCs on dangerous substances, especially toxic waste and pesticides.
