Strasbourg, 16/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by British Liberal Chris Davies, the European Parliament amended, at first reading, the draft directive on ozone in the ambient atmosphere. The Parliament approves the aims and targets set by the European Commission, including the long-term target aimed at not exceeding 120 microgrammes/m3. It does, however, introduce a buffer date, the year 2020, to reach this target, while the Commission wording, "within a foreseeable time", remains very vague. Other amendments aim to finalise the requirements to be met regarding surveillance of ozone concentrations in the Member states and the modalities whereby the results of this surveillance must be made public.
