Greece in Court of Justice for tax discrimination

Brussels, 14/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided to refer Greece to the European Court of Justice over a tax provision discriminating against European citizens of non Greek nationality. The Greek legislation sets restrictive conditions on the granting of a preferential tax rate on property transfers, when buying a property in a foreign currency. These restrictions limit the benefit of tax reductions for Greek citizens. According to the Commission this is an infraction on the principle of discrimination on the grounds of nationality. These steps with the Greek government (reasoned opinion sent on 26 August 1999) have not lead to any results.
