Council decides EU will give aid to reconstruction

Brussels, 26/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - After the General Affairs Council on Monday, the president, Jaime Gama, pointed out that the Fifteen had called on the Commission to reflect on how the EU will be able to contribute to the reconstruction of Venezuela. We give below the Conclusions adopted by the Council:

"The Council has been profoundly moved by the loss of human life and the damage caused by the December floods in Venezuela. It expresses its deepest sympathy for the victims and is pleased with the emergency aid which the Commission and the Member States have provided so far.

The Council encourages the Commission, in conjunction with the Member States, to continue and step up efforts to help the people affected and invites it to consider ways in which the European Union could contribute to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the areas most affected by the disaster. The Council will look at this matter again and it asks the Commission to submit a report to it as soon as possible".
