Parliament calls for the forthcoming IGC to introduce a European Prosecutor, responsible for offences that harm the EU's financial interests

Strasbourg, 19/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report by the German Christian-Democrat Diemut Theato, Parliament called on the European Commission to submit, before 30 June 2000, legislative proposals allowing for the introduction of a complete legal and judicial framework for the protection of the European Union's financial interests. It launched an appeal to the Intergovernmental Conference to include in its working programme a discussion on the setting up of a European Prosecutor, responsible for all offences that harm these self-same interests (406 votes in favour, 111 against and 23 abstentions). Parliament again insisted that Member States ratify, as soon as possible, the convention on the protection of the financial interests of the European Communities of 26 July 1995, that has still not taken effect.
