Lisbon, 06/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - After a meeting with European Council President Antonio Guterres and before a meeting with the EU Council President Jaime Gama, the EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, spoke on Thursday to the press of the Portuguese Presidency's commitment in support of developing European security and defence policy. The reforms necessary may be achieved without mishap and with "determination and energy", mainly because Portugal is also chairing the WEU Council, he said.
On Wednesday, during a parliamentary debate on the programme of the Portuguese Presidency, Mr Guterres had mainly stressed the Presidency's determination to strengthen the EU-NATO-WEU triangle, while stressing the need for a "true European security and defence policy".
