On Friday, 24 July, the Council of the European Union imposed new sanctions on six individuals responsible for serious human rights violations in Iran, bringing the number of natural persons and legal entities sanctioned by the EU to 269 people and 53 entities.
The measures concern five judges from regional branches of the Iranian Revolutionary Court who presided over trials targeting religious minorities and political dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi (see EUROPE 13857/20), and who sentenced political dissidents and human rights activists to death and long terms of imprisonment as well as flogging.
Also targeted is Iranian hacker and computer engineer Nima Salehi, the founder and a leading figure of Ashiyane Digital Security—a group that cooperates closely with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian cyberpolice, FATA.
The European sanctions include an asset freeze, bans on travelling to the EU, and a ban on effecting fund transfers or economic transactions.
